Ector County Independent School District operates with one central goal—equity and excellence for every child. Founded in 1921 ECISD is now the 43rd largest school district in the State of Texas. It covers 906 square miles, utilizes 40 campuses to educate nearly 26,000 students, and employs more than 3,400 people.

The student population breaks down as follows: Hispanic 63.9%, Anglo 29.1%, African-American 5.3%, Asian or Pacific Islander 0.9%, American-Indian 0.8%.

ECISD operates two 5-A high schools and an Advanced Technical Center. Odessa High School offers the prestigious International Baccalaureate Organization's Diploma Programme. Demanding Advanced Placement courses are also available to high school students. ECISD annually produces National Merit Scholars and Hispanic Merit Scholars and its students are welcomed at the top colleges and universities in the country. The Advanced Technical Center lets students embark on college- and career-focused education. Students can earn college credit and technical certifications in fields that are vital to the Permian Basin economy.

All of the six junior high schools offer Pre-Advanced Programs (Pre-AP) which help prepare students for the rigorous curriculum awaiting them in high school. These classes are open to any student wishing to enroll. Bowie Junior High offers after-school magnet classes and The Academy at Ector Junior High offers magnet classes in visual and performing arts and lifetime fitness.

Of the twenty-five elementary schools, ten are magnet campuses. All elementary schools offer full-day kindergarten. In 2010, the Texas Education Agency rated four of ECISD's elementary schools – Blackshear, Reagan, Ross, and Sam Houston – as Exemplary. It is Reagan's 15th consecutive Exemplary rating. In addition, 14 other elementary schools and four junior highs earned Recognized ratings from TEA.
