Davis Mountains State Park (six miles west of Fort Davis) Located in a sloping basin among the scenic Davis Mountains, this state park hosts more than 155,000 visitors annually. Other amenities found in its 1,869 acres include free interpretive center, bird observation window, wildlife watering station, camping, picnicking, dining room and trailer facilities. McDonald Observatory, atop 6,791-foot Mount Locke, houses 107-inch and 82-inch telescopes, making this University of Texas facility one of the world’s greatest observatories.
